THROWBACK THURSDAY: The Reelists - Freak Mode!

When UK's biggest urban collective crew So Solid came out, it was hard to know who was who and who had talent. But there was two guys that instantly showed that they were different from the others.

The Reelists consists of K1 the producer and Sef the vocalists. In order to be different from the crew, they had to do something that wasn't in the charts at the time. Sef and K1 were the pre-teen students of classic 80s soul and rap, the virginal ravers of 90s swingbeat and hip-hop. They weren't alive during soul musics heyday, yet despite being graduates of the MTV age, make music that pays tribute to the former without obsessing on the latter

Their debut single 'Freak Mode' was a hit within the industry, but sadly did not have a major impact in the charts. Although the boys did try their best to do their solo material and get it out there, it just didn't happen. Strangely enough, I actually bumped into the boys a couple months back and they told me that their currently with Roc Nation doing some writing and producing and are also taking on some new artists.

'Freak Mode' will always be one of those songs that will remind me of ol skool garage and British R&B days.
